 August 2, 1979 - July 30, 2011

On July 29, 2011 at approximately 8:15 a.m., Detective Daniel Ackerman of the Buena Park Police Department, and member of the Department’s SWAT Team, participated in a bi-annual physical fitness training exercise. After completing the training exercise, he said he felt faint and dizzy. Detective Ackerman was treated at the scene by a full-time physician who trains with the SWAT Team. Detective Ackerman was then taken to the nearby St. Jude Hospital and was admitted for treatment.

The doctors and medical staff at St. Jude Hospital provided Detective Ackerman the best of care as tests were run and treatments given. Tragically, on July 30, 2011, at approximately 3:40 a.m., Detective Ackerman passed away. He was 31 years old.

Detective Daniel Ackerman began his career at the Buena Park Police Department in 1995 as a Police Explorer. He helped Buena Park Police Explorer Post #474 win or place or in several events at formal competitions among other Explorer Posts from throughout the Western United States. In 2001, Detective Ackerman was hired by the Buena Park Police Department as a Reserve Police Officer, and was subsequently hired as a full-time officer in June of 2005.  Since that time, Detective Ackerman worked as a Patrol Officer, Range Master, SWAT Team member, and at the time of his passing was assigned to the Regional Narcotics Suppression Program.

Detective Ackerman was survived by his mother, sister, two-year-old daughter, and his extended family at the time of his passing.
