The Traffic Bureau’s primary purpose is the reduction of traffic collisions on the streets of Buena Park. This is a large responsibility, especially considering that many more people are killed or injured in traffic collisions than in violent crimes. The second responsibility of the Traffic Bureau is to investigate collisions and determine the cause or causes based upon statements and evidence. The Traffic Bureau is managed by a police lieutenant and supervised by a police sergeant who is responsible for supervising the sworn and civilian personnel that comprise the Traffic Bureau, compiling statistical information, approving traffic collision reports, adjudicating parking citations and vehicle impounds, and whom represents the police department at the city’s Traffic Commission meetings. The Traffic Bureau is comprised of two units – the Enforcement Unit and the Safety Unit. Officers riding police motorcycles staff the Enforcement Unit, while the Safety Unit is comprised of one commercial enforcement officer, two civilian police service officers, and three parking control specialists. One police clerk supports the Traffic Bureau by providing logistical support at the office, in addition, there are crossing guards posted throughout the city near the elementary schools to assist children crossing the streets before and after school.
Throughout the years, the traffic unit has been awarded several grants to help combat driving-under-the-influence (DUI) concerns. These grants have allowed the traffic unit to conduct DUI-related education, checkpoints, directed enforcement, "Every 15 Minute" training and awareness, and the "Avoid The 28" countywide DUI taskforce. As a result of proactive efforts like these, the number of DUI – related arrests has dropped and the Traffic Bureau is committed to reducing the overall number of traffic accidents.
